Moreover, with the introduction of Google Penguin, getting high-quality backlinks has become more troublesome and difficult. But the rewards have become even greater. It is now the best way to deal with the Google Penguin update.

Following are the top 5 tips of getting high-quality backlinks that not even Google Penguin disapprove of:

Google Penguin Top 5

1.  Be Wise:

Google has never been this intelligent before. You need to act cool and wise, if you want to successfully deal with that. When it comes to building backlinks, the tip is not to be aggressive. It is important to act naturally and not doing anything unusual to get unnecessary attention from Google Penguin.

In order to get benefits in the long run, professional SEO specialists now recommend to slowly and gradually build up your backlinks. Doing it patiently will ensure that you unleash the maximum gains out of the entire process.

2.  Use Social Media:

One cannot put enough stress on the importance of using social media for getting backlinks. Social networking websites, like, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ are no longer for entertainment and socialization purposes only. These are great networking tools that can be used by online and offline businesses. Moreover, these social-networking websites are a hub of high-quality backlinks.

Consider each Facebook’s like, Twitter’s tweets and Google’s +1 as a natural backlink, in which Google Penguin puts great faith.

3.   Avoid Spams:

The 3rd tip is to avoid spam as much as you can. Now with the Google Penguin update, the risks involved in spamming are way too much. Moreover, the results are no longer that much effective anyway. Blog comment spamming is one of the most widely used techniques. However, blog owners have become more cautious regarding this, as it also negatively affects their blog. So, avoiding spams is by far the most convenient approach.

4.  Avoid Bulk Directory Submission:

Directory submission is one of the most commonly used techniques for off-page SEO. The main purpose of directory submission has always been to provide backlinks to your website or blog. However, it is now time to avoid bulk directory submission.

You may not be aware of the fact that most directory submission websites, like ezinearticles, ehow and goarticles, have suffered great losses in rankings because of the Google Penguin update.

Such links are usually considered as low-quality and detrimental for your online business. This is why the best way is to avoid bulk directory submission and focus on other methods of achieving backlinks.

5.  Guest Blogging:

Guest blogging is one of the most recommended ways of getting backlinks for your online business. It has two big advantages:

·         Guest blogging enables you to get ‘targeted’ backlink. For example, if you are a freelance writer and you publish a guest blog to a website offering freelancing tips, you get a targeted backlink which is always more powerful.

·         Guest blogging is a tested way to bring more traffic to your website or blog. Then, depending on your web copies, you can convert this traffic into paying customers.

Final Words

After the introduction of Google Penguin, the concept of getting of backlinks may seem a bit difficult and troublesome. However, it is a more concrete way that brings long-lasting results. Make sure to use the above-mentioned 5 tips for getting high-quality backlinks for your online business.

Gareth, very good article. As always! :) I would like to repeat something very important from your article: “Google has never been this intelligent before.”

And now here is a warning for your readers… Social media is a very powerful weapon when it comes to getting backlinks BUT… like any weapon can hurt you if you don’t know how to (or if you can’t) use it properly. Here is why…

Let’s talk about blogger John ;-) John writes a new blog post and then adds links to that blog post on Facebook, Google+, Twitter. If no one performs actions [such as Like, Comment, Share, Retweet] regarding John’s tweets (Facebook posts, etc) or if only John’s mother & his best friend do it, then what do you think Google will say? Well?… If no one talks about that blog post, then… that content is quite worthless!

In such case, the backlinks from social media may even hurt the reputation of John’s blog in Google’s eyes! So… what’s the conclusion?

The content itself must be of good quality but… that is not enough if no one reads it and then like/share/retweet. You have to build better relationships with your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, etc. Be social and that way promote (carefully!) yourself & your work. Finally, let me share with you one of my favorite quotations: “Without promotion something terrible happens… NOTHING!” (P.T. Barnum)

      Adrian,

Very good point, thanks for that. I have always been worried that I would work hard writing blogs that would never actually get read by anybody. I always try to be as active on Facebook and Twitter as possible and Google + is now very high on my priorities.

I also now use Social Metrics Pro as a good way of measuring where I’m falling short on the social media aspect.

Maybe a new blog post covering this topic is on the cards? ;-)

    Hi Gareth,

I totally agree with you. At first, I was shocked when I heard about the Google Penguin update. To stay on top is quite a job, but in the end I’ve learn to appreciate this update.

  4. Hi,
Great achievement Gareth, The recent Google panda penalized many sites due to over submissions. So to get-out from this we have to prefer less submissions. That submissions will only to High pr sites, by this no problem from Google. And also the good pr sites gives more traffic to our site. And the Guest blogging is more effective thing to bring the good backlinks and traffic. I prefer also the “Link Wheel” through Web 2.0 pages, this concept is having more priority after Google algorithm updates.

    Hi Gareth,
There is in fact no bible to deal with the Google penguin update. But these are some of the great tips which can be used to tackle the problem. Social media can truly act as a great way to evade some of the problem caused by the update. Thanks for the share.

    • Gareth Morgan says:

      Aayna,

I’ve always been into social media. I think as long as you share your posts with others and continue to share eye catching posts in return, lasting relationships will be built.

  6. Joy says:

Hey Gareth! These are brilliant recommendations, I think it would also be best to avoid over-optimizing altogether. Sometimes it just takes a little self-control and discipline in SEO because after all, too much of anything is bad :) Thanks for sharing!

      Joy,

I was guilty of over doing it with SEO. It caused a big strain for me because I’m not a fan of it anyway and things like keyword stuffing just got on my nerves. I’m glad Google has changed the ‘rules’.

  7. Emilia says:

This is water under the bridge..really. So I see no point in committing the same mistakes and being penalized all over again. Self-control and a little perseverance will definitely spare us from all this trouble. Thanks Gareth, great post as usual!

i think the Penguin update is Google’s way to safeguard quality content from our blogs. It’s frustrating to think that there are people who copy them and paste them on their own sites

    • Gareth Morgan says:

So very true Carla. A friend of mine has just recently had one of his posts plagarized and some people even told him to just “get on with it” because it’s expected! He shouldn’t have to put up with it!

  10. Kristine says:

Hello Gareth! Thanks for the thought-provoking share. I think that it pays to stop and analyze our strategies once in awhile to avoid being penalized, these tips are great for anyone who is willing to persevere and work really hard to make it to the top instead of taking risky shortcuts :)

  14. Kelly says:

Writing quality content is a must-have of course. Not only will you get more Google juice but your readers will remember your presence and will go back to you sooner or later.

Fantastic! Yes you have to reach out to your readers through the social media giants like Facebook and Twitter for instance.

  17. Richard says:

Some good advise there for the beginner like myself. Luckily my site wasnt running when Penguin was introduced by Google so I wasnt effected. Basically the best is blog commenting. I have though found it very difficult to find Guest Posting related to the Auto industry. Is Forum commenting a good way to get backlinks

    • Gareth Morgan says:

      Richard,

It’s good as long as you’re providing valuable comments related to the subject. People can see link dropping coming a mile off.
